With my feelings on fire
Guess I'm a bad liar
Without her brother around, the house seemed much too quiet to Cassidy. It was worst when she realised she couldn't even call her best friend. She had a lot more to deal with and she was doing it alone. Her stupid brother won't even do anything to help her out knowing that they were in the same state.
Coward.
On top of all that, Will was still in a bad mood what with his best friend moving away so they haven't really seen each other all that much. Cassidy had gotten so used to the sudden influx of people in her life when they were on the London trip that the sudden lack of people hit her too damn hard.
So she called the only other person she had grown extremely close to, hoping he didn't think she was being a burden. And that he wasn't with his new sweetheart.
She had texted Miles that she would be at their cafe if he was free. She got ready and left the very empty house to get to the cafe.
Because she didn't actually expect Miles to show up due to how last minute it was, Cassidy grabbed a book and settled in the arm chair she usually occupied, her legs tucked under her as she curled up with her hot chocolate.

When They Call My Name
These thoughts will kill me
Returning to reality, or rather, the United States wasn't as bad as Miles had expected it to be. He'd thought that the dreamy haze would wear off and that the girl he'd come home with would disappear right in front of him. The haze had faded, but the girl hadn't. It was sort of incredible that he and his twin were both happy, genuinely happy at that. And he'd thought that his brother was, too. If he were to be honest, he hadn't kept up with his brother and his best friend since they returned home, but he didn't see a particular reason to question where they were. Everything had seemed perfect their last day in London.
Miles had gotten back into his training and was doing his best to get back in shape for lacrosse. There were other ways he'd been working out which always made him kind of laugh when he thought about it, but he'd gotten out of running for too long. While he was out on the track, he felt his phone vibrate against the band on his arm where he had it strapped to him. He jogged off to the side and checked his phone to see who was texting him. When he caught the name on the screen he grinned widely and made his way back to the dorms so that he could shower and change before meeting with her.
He was a little later than he intended, so when he walked in he already had a sheepish look on his face. It didn't take him long to spot her and when he did, he about squealed like a girl, a very manly girlish squeal. He plucked the book from her hands and set it on the table, careful not to lose the page and scooped her up in a tight hug, "Holy Jesus, I missed you so much."
But I think I’ve found the light.

With my feelings on fire
Guess I'm a bad liar
Cassidy was about to yell at the person taking her book before she realised that it was Miles. She jumped right into his arms and clung to him. She didn't know how long the hug lasted but she was just so happy Miles was there.
It took everything in her not to start crying then and there.
"I missed you too!" She responded before finally letting him go, surreptitiously wiping at the corners of her eyes where tears had leaked out anyway. "Did you just come back from practice?" She asked with a smile.

When They Call My Name
These thoughts will kill me
As Miles hugged her, the emotions that came off of her hit him in waves. The first and foremost being relief mixed with excitement which mirrored how he felt. He couldn't express how much he actually missed her because he'd been so wrapped up in his life at the academy and adjusting to having a girlfriend for the first time. The second resembled desperation and a sickening loneliness that was buried deeper. When they hit, he couldn't help but hug her closer because the concern he was beginning to feel was overwhelming.
She released him and Miles held her at arms length to gauge the look on her face. Her question was innocent and the smile was genuine, but he couldn't shake the feelings that he'd gathered from her before. Her reason for texting him seemed clear now and if he hadn't felt guilty for their time apart, he did now more than ever.
He tried to keep his grin and succeeded as he answered her, "I was running actually. Got a little behind after being in London and having my grandmother choose dinner most nights. The woman was trying to get me fat, I swear." He patted his flat stomach and laughed. Ever since he came back from England, he felt less suffocated by his social anxiety, like he was actually starting to feel normal. It helped that the cafe was quiet and mostly empty, but even in the academy he didn't feel like he was going crazy with the mixture of emotions around him. His mind was always focused on the emotions of the one who's hand he held fast to between classes.
"How's it been going since I last saw you? You and Will okay?" It was not subtle, he realized, but as he took a seat, he knew he didn't care. If there was something wrong, he wanted to know.
But I think I’ve found the light.

Guess I'm a bad liar
It was difficult to hide her emotions from her people, it seemed, Miles more so than anybody else. He, of course, had his ability that picked up on the slightest hint of turmoil. She was glad he focused on himself first before asking about her though.
"Will and I are okay." She nodded. She wasn't lying, not really. He just felt a little distant. She didn't want Miles to have cause to be indifferent towards his big brother. "I've just had a rough couple of months what with school and work and there's this thing with my brother...it's boring. She waved a dismissive hand before tugging him down to sit.
"How're things with Spence?" She grinned cheekily.

When They Call My Name
These thoughts will kill me
Her dismissive way of answering did nothing to make him feel better about the emotions he picked up from her. He knew she'd bury whatever it was if it had to do with his brother, but Miles was not unaware of how crappy his brother could be. While he was far more forgiving than his twin, Will still had a lot of making up to do. And if he did anything that hurt Miles' best friend, well, he'd hit him once, he would just have to do it again.
"If anyone understand drama with an older brother, it's me. If you need me to say anything or do anything, all ya have to do is ask, Cassidy," Because if Will wasn't going to be helpful, she should at least have one guy in her life that offered to be. He eased into his seat, happily absorbing the comfort of sitting after his constant movement that day. Miles couldn't help but be protective of her. She was the nicest person he'd ever met and she was in love with a mess of a person. He couldn't stop from drawing parallels between them and himself. Spencer was an amazing person and she had fallen for him, he wasn't even sure if that was fair to her. He carried almost as much baggage as his brother, or so he thought.
When Cassidy mentioned his girlfriend, he couldn't help but smile regardless of the crushing worry he felt. "Things are good. She didn't completely vanish as soon as we got home, which I'm taking as a huge victory. I think she might like me a little bit," He laughed and rubbed the back of his neck, still settled on figuring out what was really wrong.
"I'm sorry I haven't gotten to hang with you as much, things got hectic. But I'm around now so if you ever want to meet up, just text me, ya know. I'll be there without hesitation."
But I think I’ve found the light.

Cassidy looked at Miles with a grateful smile, leaning in to hug him. "Miles, you're the sweetest. I'm not sure beating my brother up will do any good." She chuckled, stroking the back of his head affectionately.
She melted into a puddle when she saw the smile on her very first best friend at the mention of his new girlfriend. She hadn't really had the pleasure of talking to Spencer at length but what little she knew of the younger woman, she liked. She didn't seem the type to break Miles despite being able to.
"Just a little bit," she teased as she grabbed his hand and gave it a squeeze. "I'm so happy for you, Miles."
His apology was met with a shake of her head. "No way, little dude. Don't be sorry and for sure I'll text. I've been just as busy. Been running around so much that it's messing with my biology. Getting tired more often and I think I'm coming down with something. It's so annoying. This always happens when I do too much but like...I have to, you know?"

When They Call My Name
These thoughts will kill me
Miles returned her hug and gave a light squeeze for good measure, "Well the offer is always on the table."
He could tell that the conversation between them was easing the emotions that he'd felt strongly before from her. It seemed that the distraction was worth something, but it still didn't help him because he wanted to know the cause of her loneliness. Will hadn't left her side the whole trip, sure he had classes, but Miles didn't think he'd wander too far for very long. Maybe it was just Miles, but he did whatever he could to spend as much time with Spencer as he could without being totally smothering. Lucky for him they were still in the early stages of their relationship which made it they honeymoon phase. He didn't think his brother had ever done the honeymoon phase. "Yeah, she's really great. But I mean, I've known that since we were like twelve."
Miles grinned at her shaking head and raised his hands in surrender. When she went on about how fatigued she was, he frowned and his eyebrows pulled together. Miles maintained a grip on her hand, "You've gotta slow down, Cas. It's not good for you. I know you've got a lot on your plate, but can't you just delegate some of it? Or something so that you get the rest you need. I don't want whatever this is to get worse."
But I think I’ve found the light.

With my feelings on fire
Guess I'm a bad liar
Cassidy cupped his cheek and smiled affectionately at him. It was so easy to be with Miles that she forgot that he was Will's brother. They were like day and night. Not that she would trade Will for anything but still, the contrast was too hard to miss.
She wanted to tell Miles about Will but it just felt wrong to complain about him to his brother when they were still mending their relationship. And besides, Will wasn't exactly the problem. Cassidy had met Gabriel and he was a flight risk. She didn't know him all too well but she knew that Will depended on that friendship more than he depended on their relationship. She didn't mind all that much because she was still learning about Will as they went along. But Gabe and Will have been friends half of Will's life. For Gabe to up and leave like that, it would take a toll on Will that Cassidy didn't really know how to fix.
She decided to concentrate on Miles, genuinely happy that he was happy too. And a lot more confident, Cassidy noted. Ever since they met, Cassidy had always found him so quiet and easily embarrassed. Although the latter was still quite true, there was an air about him that made it seem less self inflicted.
"Spence is a lucky girl. And I mean you are too, Spencer is pretty great but you're one in a million, Miles." She ruffled his hair and scrunched her nose up affectionately.
Miles' frown caused Cassidy to do so as well. He was right in that she needed to slow down but she honestly couldn't. She worked at one of only three veterinary clinics in their small town so sometimes there would be an influx of patients. And don't even get her started on school. She was in her last semester and all ten professors decided it was best to just dump all the projects on them now than doing it staggeringly so she had to keep late nights all the time now.
"I'll be fine I guess. I'm just complaining too much." She chuckled, waving a dismissive hand. "Anyway, how're your studies? You're not so sexed up that you're not concentrating on school, are you?" She grinned.

When They Call My Name
These thoughts will kill me
At the question of being 'sexed up' Miles' face scrunched up and he shook his head, "What is it with you and Charlotte? Both making comments about my sex life. How d'you even know that I'm having it? I don't remember telling y-" He stopped and his hand went to his forehead. He might not have told her, but his twin likely had let it slip to James who'd let it slip to Will who would absolutely say something to Cassidy. His family was a bunch of gossipers.
With his hand over his face, he mumbled against it, "School is fine. Grades are good." His hand dropped and he let out a heavy sigh. He was easily the most awkward member of the family and yet, somehow, he'd managed to be the hottest topic of their conversations. Miles had hoped that Charlotte would be or that Will would be. Anybody but him and Spencer.
He couldn't even think to turn the question back on her because he didn't feel comfortable talking about his best friend or his brother's sex life. He'd heard enough through Spencer about Lottie, and that was crippling enough. "How's school been going for you? Almost done, yeah?"
But I think I’ve found the light.

With my feelings on fire
Guess I'm a bad liar
Miles' reaction to her question was everything, leaving Cassidy in stitches as she laughed quietly, covering her face in the arm of the chair she was sitting in. When she regained her composure, albeit a little as she was still wiping her eyes of the tears that had fallen from laughing too much, she rested her cheek against her hand while the other grabbed his. "You're too easy, Miles." She said, rubbing the back of his hand with her thumb.
When he asked about school, she released a huge sigh. "Yes. Last leg. I'm just ready to heal animals you know? Like...I don't know why I had to go to school for it, it's not like I need it." She grinned conspiratorially before squeezing his hand.
"Hey Miles...this is a weird thing to ask, I realise this but like...do you think I'd be a good mother?"

When They Call My Name
These thoughts will kill me
Miles pursed his lips and shook his head. It wasn't fair that everyone knew he was an easy target. The fact that he'd grown up a decent human being wasn't his fault. Everyone around him hadn't exactly tried to make him one. He had no great role models, save for his grandfather that he hardly saw. In fact, he was happy he wasn't some weird perv like the rest of his lot. "You've been around my brother and sister far too long, you're supposed to be the nice one, remember?"
He grinned back at her and nodded, he could understand her eagerness to get on with her career, despite not knowing what he was going to do with his own life. He seemed to be the one who was struggling the most out of his family. Will had chosen medicine, Charlotte had chosen literature, Miles didn't know what he was passionate about. But he wanted to be doing it sooner rather than later. School wasn't meant for him.
The change in subject made him tilt his head and he narrowed his eyes as he appraised her. Miles knew he wasn't really the person to ask, what with his mother being sort of shit, but Cassidy reminded him very little of his mother which had to be a good sign. He added pressure to her hand as he spoke, "Initially I'd have said yes, but after that sexed up comment, I'm not so sure anymore."
But I think I’ve found the light.

Cassidy snorted and shook her head. "What? I can't read suddenly. I don't know." She flipped her hair over her shoulder before laughing. "I am still so very nice. Charlotte loves me. You can't tell me that's not a miracle in and of itself." She stuck her tongue out before grinning.
His reaction to her question had her punching him playfully on his arm. "Come on! Like...seriously. I could take care of another human being, right?"

When They Call My Name

She wasn't wrong. The fact that Charlotte liked her as much as she did was shocking. What was more shocking was that her adoration towards Cassidy was helping her ease into a semi-okay relationship with their brother. Miles didn't quite know how to take either of those things, but he rolled his eyes at Cas anyway, "Sure."
His hand covered his arm and he burst out laughing. Payback was payback and this had been sweet. When she pressed on, he grew a little suspicious and he arched an eyebrow, "I mean, yeah, but...are you and Will...trying?" The last word he struggled to get out because the means of trying led to a conversation he wasn't keen on having. It was bad enough she'd asked about his sex life. He didn't want any details of hers.
But I think I’ve found the light.

She laughed derisively and pointed at him mockingly. "I'm right. Y'all love me because I'm nice and sweet and charming." She shrugged. Was she actually being serious about those traits? Absolutely not. She was still entirely certain that the actual verdict about their love for her was still out.
Miles' question brought another shrug from the brunette. "I don't think he's actively trying to put a baby in me but like...I wouldn't be opposed to it." She looked down at their joined hands and gave a small smile. "It terrifies me but at the same time like...if it were to happen somehow...I forgot to take my pills or the condom broke...something somehow, it wouldn't be the most awful thing in the world."
She covered her face with both hands and shook her head. "God what am I thinking? Will probably doesn't even want any kids." She snorted and shook her head again. "Whatever," she laughed and waved a dismissive hand. "Okay let's just erase that from memory thank you." She turned to face Miles with a smile.
"How's college so far, the whole experience I mean, for you? Has anything piqued your interest? Your freshman year is just to sample everything before you make a decision after all."
